MARYSVILLE TRIBUTE HEADLINES NU COUNTRY TV

We go behind the scenes to bring you excusive footage of the recording of the bushfire benefit song Marysville at 9.30 pm - Saturday - on Nu Country TV on C 31.

Californian born singer Kevin Welch wrote the evocative song about the Black Saturday fires for the St Vincent De Paul CD After The Fire.

Kane-Welch-Kaplin recorded it at the Salt Studio in East Brighton during Welch's 12th Australian tour in February.

Vinnies communications manager Carol Taylor persuaded Welch and promoter Rob Hall to open a window in their busy tour to cut Marysville at Peter Frawley's studio and donate their talent.

Our editor Kerry Richardson filmed the trio in Port Fairy and interspersed the audio for the song with Vinnies docco footage.

Shock Records released Marysville as a single to preview the After The Fire CD, now available at Collingwood's famed Last Record Store, JB Hi-Fi and Vinnies centres - all proceeds to fire victims.

Texan troubadour Rodney Crowell, who toured here in April, also returns as a solo artist and with embryonic band The Cherry Bombs.

Georgian born superstar Alan Jackson, who has cut Crowell songs, also performs a tribute song to a former woman employee on the show repeated Wednesday - 3.30 pm and Tuesday at 3.30 am.

Former Trick Pony singer Heidi Newfield debuts with her eulogy to the late superstar Johnny Cash and singing spouse June Carter Cash.

SHANE HOWARD AND ROSS BUCHANAN

Former Goanna singer Shane Howard wrote new song Carry Me about the fires and cut it at his studio at Killarney on the Shipwreck Coast.

It's also on After The Fire - on sale in Howard's hometown Warrnambool at indie retailer Capricorn Records and the Vinnies store in Fairy St.

Howard has been touring Ireland while brother Damian Howard's Ploughboys work the folk festival circuit as an appetiser to Tamworth in January.

Kinglake singer Ross Buchanan, who lost a son and daughter on Black Saturday, cut his song Salty Tears for After The Fire.

Buchanan, singer for Country Paydirt, performed it at the Whittlesea bushfire benefit festival on April 4.

Ross also performed his song at other festivals where he and his family sold After The Fire to raise funds for fellow bushfire victims.

RODNEY CROWELL SEX & GASOLINE

Texan troubadour Rodney Crowell and guitarist Will Kimbrough won a vast new audience when they toured in April with Nu Country TV host and singer-songwriter Felicity.

Crowell performs the video for Sex & Gasoline - a social comment song on pop culture - title track of his 20th album.

Crowell's second singing spouse Claudia Church also appears in the video.

Rodney, now 58, wed Claudia in 1996 after he split with Rosanne Cash - daughter of the man in black

Crowell is indebted to superstar Keith Urban for recording his songs and fellow expat - Quorn born guitarist-singer-songwriter Jedd Hughes - for playing in his Nashville band.

Rodney and embryonic band The Cherry Bombs also reprise the video for humorous song It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long.

Crowell and Kimbrough scored applause when they performed the song at Prince Of Wales Hotel in St Kilda and the Harmony Row Vineyard near Kyneton.

Award winning guitarist Vince Gill - special guest on the new Willie & The Wheel disc - appears in drag in the video.

The son of a late appellate court judge in Columbus, Ohio, rarely frocks up when home with second singing spouse - Christian singer and golf partner Amy Grant.

ALAN JACKSON - SISSY'S SONG

Georgian born superstar Alan Jackson performs in the video for Sissy's Song off his huge selling 17th album Good Time.

Leslie "Sissy" Fitzgerald worked for Alan until she died in motorbike accident on May 20, 2007.

Jackson, 50 and father of three daughters, wrote the song for her funeral and recorded it after an amazing reaction.

Sissy's husband, who restores cars for a living, works with Alan.

She also left behind a college-age daughter and a son in high school.

The shock of such a sudden tragedy shattered Jackson.

"I didn't sleep for a while," he says. "So I sat down one day and wrote this song, and after that I felt all right. A lot of people told me how much it made them feel better and helped them get through it a little easier. So I was very proud of it."

The black-and-white video, directed by Scott Scovill, features Alan in performance shots against the back-lit pews of historic Bear Creek Church - a tiny Civil War-era building listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

It's on their latest album Written In Chalk.

Fellow Highwaymen recorded Good Morning John, for friend-mentor Johnny Cash, about his struggles with addiction early in his life.

It's on the new Kristofferson disc Closer To The Bone - his second on New West Records, scheduled for release on September 29.

Heidi, 38, grew up on a horse farm in northern California and named her first band after a trick pony.

They split after a decade in 2006.

Newfield and Hunter Valley singer Kirsty Lee Akers both recorded the Angaleena Presley song Knocked Up on their most recent albums.
