Appalachian Colby T Helms showcases his love of brandy in the second of our Behind Bars drinking double shots.

Colby was born in Boones Mill, Virginia, deep in Blue Ridge Mountains.

He lives in an underground house built by his late father on land his family owned for generations.

Colby, 21, taught himself guitar, banjo and mandolin when he was 12.

His Mountain Brandy video is his testament to both the people and valleys of Appalachia that shaped him.

Mountain Brandy is on his debut album Tales of Misfortune produced by Billy Hurt.

“This album delves into my teenage years growing up in rural Southwest Virginia ,” Helms revealed.

“I hope that listeners can feel the magic of the sounds, scenery, and culture of my region when spinning this album.”

It features ragtime First Snow set entirely in a dream to emotional crescendo of Daddy's Pocket-Knife as Helms grieves his late father who inspired his path to music. It features journeys through pain of unrequited love toll of life on the road and hypocrisy within religion while acknowledging mystical pull of his hometown that keeps reeling him back.

Australian duo The Pleasures - Catherine Britt and Lachlan Bryan - took their name from a brothel in Austin , Texas , they found on a Lone Star State trip.

It inspired their video for The Beginning Of The End - the Pleasures debut album title track.

Prolific Golden Guitarist and breast cancer survivor Britt, 39, lives in Newcastle.

The Pleasures previously fronted our show with live version of a song they wrote in a fever one night in Melbourne.

Every Story Has Two Sides was the second single from The Pleasures debut album on Catherine's Beverley Hillbillies record label.

“Lachlan and I have always clicked in life and in song” Catherine revealed.

“And we've always had an unspoken understanding and respect for one another. These songs came so easy - they flowed out of us like a raging stream. I just want more honest, real music in the world and I couldn't think of a better person to make it with!”

“I don't think know anyone else who feels and understands country music the way Catherine does, Lachlan explained.

“She sounds authentic because she is authentic. When she opens her mouth and sings you can hear the neon lights buzzing, you can taste the tequila and you can barely see for the cloud of smoke. It's all that stuff that people try and fake - they try and put in on - but it's like she was just born with it”.

Catherine released ninth album Home Truths in January 2021 and Mornington Peninsula born Bryan released seven albums including some with The Wildes.
