CATHERINE BRITT FLORAL TRIBUTE
It included a duet with seven times wed Texan Steve Earle on disc finale You And Me Against The World - a song inspired by her husband Jamie. “We made it in a backwoods barn, on a farm, so it was still really country,” Britt revealed. “Ryan was very involved, very passionate about it - he really cared. He suggested musicians, and I chose them with him through a rigorous process before recording the album, but we were on the same page about everything, which I'll admit was a big relief. We used a lot of the same musicians he had used with Vance Joy and the Lumineers . I basically got both their bands, combined, which is pretty amazing.” She co-wrote songs with Felicity Urquhart, Melanie Horsnell and the title track with Tony Buchen. When Britt cut her fifth self-titled album in Austin in the heart of Texas she mined a murder vein from deep in our red heart. She resurrected the old style murder ballad popularised in the thirties and forties and refined down the years. Britt's teen tragedy Sally Bones was rooted in the tribal tribulations of our outback culture and crosses all races, genders and genres. She reportedly sourced the subject from cousin Bess Nungarrayi Price - a key warrior in her brave battle against child sexual abuse and neglect in Northern Territory Aboriginal communities. Their rocky relationship, instigated by his father's alcoholism, meant that for 18 years including his childhood Gord didn't know his Dad. MISSISSIPPI MINSTREL MISSING Mississippi minstrel William Michael Morgan heads to the California desert in his beat-up Ford pick-up truck in his latest video. Morgan, now 23, spins bottles as trains roll by after leaving the comfort of his motel pool. Missing is a highlight of baritone Morgan's second album Vinyl . It follows his first Top 10 hit I Met A Girl - written by Sam Hunt, Shane McAnally and Trevor Rosen of Old Dominion . The singer from Vicksburg, Mississippi, debuted with throwback to the more traditional sound missing from country radio - on the Grand Ole Opry . The song has progressive elements but Morgan's performance is reminiscent of a young George Strait. His parents enjoyed classic country music, and aged six, Morgan was a Marty Robbins fan. By the age of nine, Morgan had his first guitar, and taught himself songs by Keith Whitley and Mark Chesnutt, checking out instructional videos online when he had trouble figuring out licks. When Morgan was 12, inspired by a Dierks Bentley concert, he formed a band with local pickers - most old enough to be his father - that performed in Vicksburg and nearby on weekends. In 2006 Morgan, 13, and his band released indie album, Always Country , and he worked part-time to help finance musical projects. Morgan was 16 when he visited Nashville for song-writing sessions, and at 18 moved there to follow his dreams. At 19 Morgan landed publishing and recording deals with Warner/Chappell Music.
