JIM LAUDERDALE MEETS JESUS IN A BAR

Jim Lauderdale had good qualifications to play late Texan George Jones in Stand By Your Man - stage version of the Tammy Wynette story in Nashville .

Lauderdale wrote his 1991 song King Of Broken Hearts - title of our mini-documentary in Behind Bars - about The Possum who died at 81 on April 26, 2013.

" King of Broken Hearts just popped up for me," said Lauderdale, 57, who has released 23 albums since 1986.

"I was reading a Gram Parsons biography by Syd Griffin. In the book, Pamela Des Barres was talking about how Gram had a party and he put on George Jones for people who hadn't heard of him. When I read it, I got goose bumps and this melody came. I was living in California and went out to Cap Rock where Gram used to hang out and was cremated. And the song came to me. A lot of times, a melody will come at the spur of the moment. I'll think of a phrase and the melody will come right then."

The dual Grammy Award winner also returns with a live version of his song I Met Jesus In A Bar.

He wrote his Jesus song with Leslie Satcher, born in Paris , Texas , after the death of his dad - in 2004.

The multi-instrumentalist also played in the house band in Tim McGraw-Gwyneth Paltrow movie Country Strong.

Jim increased career longevity by writing hits for artists diverse as Texans George Strait , Dixie Chicks, Bruce Robson, Kelly Willis, Jon Randall, Mark Chesnutt, Deryl Dodd, Rick Trevino, Lee Ann Womack and Doug Supernaw, Vince Gill and Patty Loveless.

Lauderdale debuted here in 2002 with Kim Richey, Canadian Fred Eaglesmith and expat Van Diemen's Land singer Audrey Auld and performed 2007 CMC Rocks The Snowys festival at Thredbo with another of his happy song recipients - California born chart topper and surfing cowboy Gary Allan who returned here in October.

Australian artists Melinda Schneider and Felicity have also recorded Jim's songs.

JENNY QUEEN OF BROKEN HEARTS

Expatriate Ohio born singer Jenny Queen is aided by some princes in her video for Let Her Go from her third album Small Town Misfits released earlier this year.

Producer-guitarist Shane Nicholson performs in her video and on her album.

“This song grew from my thinking about the moment when you wake up, after a heartbreak, and you're hung-over and confused, and suddenly you remember you're on your own, and you're poleaxed all over again,” Queen explained.

“It spun out from there to address the extra stab of playing out a very private moment on a public stage. Shane Nicholson's backing vocals were sort of ninja-ed in. We recorded it late one night and I went home to get some sleep. The next morning when I came in to the studio, he played me his haunting vocal. Beautiful ninja vocals.”

Jenny, now 35, kicked off her career in Sydney in 2004 and has also written a book Hummingbird Cake about her two sisters.

She was born in Springfield , Ohio , and exposed to bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe's music.

Queen's grandfather is a Southern Baptist minister and she sang in church groups throughout her teens.

She attended Ohio State University , earning a B.A. and a Masters in International Relations from University Of Chicago .

Jenny is a volunteer for Amnesty International and has been involved with educating refugees.

JACKSON TAYLOR & THE SINNERS

Jackson Taylor & The Sinners debut with their video for What A Way To Go from their 14th album Crazy Again.

What A Way To Go , written by Bobby David and Jim Rushing, was recorded by Bobby Borchers in 1977 and top 10 hit as title track of Ray Kennedy's debut 1990 album.

Jackson is one of 11 children born in a labour camp in Moody, Texas.

His lost highway took him from the Lone Star state to Las Vegas back to Texas where he now hangs his hat.

Jackson 's passion for roots country was passed down by his dad who took him to see and hear country greats like Waylon, Willie, and Billy Joe Shaver perform.

His adolescence was spent bouncing from one migrant labour town to another, finally settling in a small farming town in Washington State .

After graduating high school, he moved back to Texas but left to try to make it in Nashville .

There, Jackson found work as a songwriter but after a couple of tough frustrating years he discovered Nashville was not home.

From New York City to Los Angeles , Jackson found his rightful home, ironically right back where his life began - in Texas .

Billy Joe Shaver says “ Jackson 's songs are so real and honest, you know straight off he's been there and done that. He writes and sings like he lives, great songs that I believe will live forever."

PARKER MILLSAP TRUCKSTOP GOSPEL

Oklahoma roots singer Parker Millsap cleanses his soul in his vibrant video for Truck Stop Gospel from his self-titled album, released in February.

Milsap, just 21, was raised in a Pentecostal church in Norman , Oklahoma

That's the same city country star Vince Gill - son of a judge - was born.

Millsap lives outside Oklahoma City in small town turned bedroom community of Guthrie.

“Both sides of my family have been here for 5 generations,” revealed Millsap who performed his video live and acoustic with his band at Blackwatch studios, Norman , in June.

“100 years ago, when my ancestors got to Oklahoma , it wasn't much more than some hard dirt, a few railroad stops, and a bunch of cattle. It's still about the same except you can add oil rigs in there too. The folks who moved here and survived had to be rugged, and they had to rely on each other, because the landscape sure as hell wasn't doing them any favours. I could go on about my Okie theories for days, but I think that there remains a sort of pioneer spirit here.”

Millsap performs an eclectic hybrid of roots music.

“To me, gospel singing and blues singing are the same thing, just one's about Jesus and the other is about women or the devil or something,” added Millsap who returns to the Grand Ole Opry on November 18.

“I did listen to a bunch of blues growing up, too. As far as developing a sound, I just try to sing like the people that I like hearing. My vocal idols are Tom Waits, Howlin' Wolf, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and Freddie Mercury.”

Millsap plays the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio , California , on Friday, April 24, 2015, with Sturgill Simpson, The Devil Makes Three , Kacey Musgraves, and Merle Haggard.

BART CROW FLIES BEHIND BARS

Texan Bart Crow ends up behind bars by design in his video for Loving You Is A Crime from fifth album Dandelion .

The former soldier performs his crime of passion with an ardent warder.

"I surrounded myself with a great team and whittled 78 songs to 12, along with two covers,” Crow revealed.

“We went into the studio and the whole thing just clicked."

Recorded with producer and Pat Green drummer/co-producer Justin Pollard and members of Green's band, with keyboardist Michael Ramos and guitarist David Grissom.

He includes the duet If I Go, I'm Goin with Macy Maloy and album debut single Little Bit of Luck.

Bart began song-writing at Tarleton State University in Stephenville , Texas .

"I kept a journal in the Army and I went back into that and moved some things around and made a couple of songs up, not even knowing what to do or how to do it," he says.

"Then, one day I said to my friend Jason Boland, 'I think I'd like to try my hand at this. I've got this book of songs I've been writing.' He said, 'Why not? We have the rest of our lives to be old and boring. Might as well do it while you can."
