LUKE EXPLORES LADY OF THE LAND

Luke O'Shea didn't have to look far to eulogise the pioneering work of Joy McKean, sister Heather and Joy's late husband Slim Dusty.

He reached back to an era before TV for his video for Lady of The Land when our troubadours headed bush at the drop of a hat with their families.

O'Shea honoured the work of sons and daughters of the soil who supported the work of our bush balladeers on the outback agricultural show and rodeo circuit.

They tilled the landscape for fertile minstrel material before the mobile phone and Facebook faddists desensitised the history of our land way beyond the concrete corrals and neon.

O'Shea first performed on Nu Country TV in our embryonic days when our TV show creator and acclaimed actor-voiceover king Peter Hosking trudged from the Buck N Bull way out west at Tottenham to the Armadale Hotel wealth belt to catch Luke & his Medicine Wheel spinning live in the saddle.

That was then and this is now.

The Armadale Hotel is now a fine food and wine HQ and Hosking is living in exile in Prague between tours of Texas and way beyond in his acting and singing soirees.

Lady Of The Land is on Luke's fifth album Sing You Up and won O'Shea two more Golden Guitars this year.

KACEY MUSGRAVES TOWS TRAILER IN SONG

Texan Kacey Musgraves exposes her rural roots in her live version of The Trailer Song.

It's cut from the same cloth as her CMA and ACM award winning fourth album Same Trailer Different Park.

Kacey, just 25, is blazing a new trail with Ashley Monroe, Miranda Lambert and other cutting edge country chanteuses.

And, like Monroe and Lambert, she released indie discs before her mainstream success.

Musgraves won two Grammys in February for best country album and best country song Merry Go Round.

Her sexual liberation anthem Follow Your Arrow has boosted her popularity way beyond the country genre.

"The record was basically done - I was getting a lot of pressure because there were already lot of great songs in the batch," Musgraves said.

"But co-writers Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally and I had these ideas - they just really encapsulated where my head was at. I knew exactly what I wanted to do sonically. I said, 'This isn't a complete record without them.'"

Musgraves will also join pop star Katy Perry on the Perry Prismatic World Tour in August.

A POPE WITH NO PARISH

At 25 Florida born belle Cassadee Pope is the same age as Kacey and was the first female winner of The Voice reality TV talent show in the U.S. when she won Series #3

Cassadee bids adios to a former lover on a swing or two in the video for Wasting All These Tears for her debut solo debut CD Frame By Frame, released on October 8, 2013.

The album debuted at #9 on Billboard 200 and #1 on Country Albums charts.

And, like other recent Voice winners, she was mentored by Oklahoma star Blake Shelton.

In the third live round, Pope performed Over You , co-written by Shelton about his older brother who had died in a car accident when Blake was 14.

Pope dedicated the song to her great grandfather who died when she was young.

She was the lead vocalist of the pop rock band Hey Monday , on hiatus from 2011.

Pope released the album Hold on Tight and three EPs with the band.

In early 2012 she played her first acoustic solo tour before releasing her debut solo EP in May later that year.

CADILLAC 3 CRUISE THROUGH THE SOUTH

The Cadillac 3 debuts on the show with a little help from Florida Georgia Line , Texan Mike Eli of the Eli Young Band and Dierks Bentley in its video for All About The South .

The trio strut their stuff with some free range dancing Dixie belles in stage cages.

The song debuted at #58 on Country Airplay charts on December 21, 2013, after being second single from its self-titled debut disc for Big Machine Records .

On January 15, 2014, the group, originally Cadillac Black , played its song on an episode of popular TV series Nashville and followed with third single I'm Southern.

The trio were once in the band American Bang .

Guitarist Daren Johnston wrote You Gonna Fly for touring expatriate Australasian superstar Keith Urban and Southern Girl for Louisiana born singing actor Tim McGraw.

KEVIN FOWLER CHIPPING AWAY

Amarillo born Kevin Fowler has been firing up the honky tonks of the Lone Star State for more than two decades.

He performs in the vibrant video for Me and You this week from his seventh album Chipping Away.

Although Kevin also recorded satirical Don't Touch My Willie about the Red Headed Stranger's drug busts the singing actor didn't join the cast for his new video.

But Fowler, now 48, released sardonic sibling Santa Got Busted By The Border Patrol with a cameo by Asleep At The Wheel singer Ray Benson.

Kevin has a propensity for booze songs including The Lord Loves a Drinking Man, Beer Season, Long Neckin' (Makes for Short Memories), Drinking Days, Ain't Drinking No More, Beer Money, All The Tequila in Tijuana and Beer, Bait & Ammo.

Louisiana gubernatorial candidate Sammy Kershaw and fellow Texans George Jones and Mark Chesnutt recorded the latter song - title track of his 2000 album.

Chesnutt also cut The Lord Loves A Drinking Man .

Fowler, father of three daughters, could feel jinxed - his last three labels closed shortly after releasing his albums.

In 2010 when Kevin signed with Disney subsidiary Lyric Street Records he was on a roll but eight weeks after release of his single Pound Sign they folded.

Fowler broke the streak after signing to Colt Ford's label, Average Joe's Entertainment .

He and Colt collaborated on Ford hit Hip Hop In A Honky Tonk for 2010 Ford album Chicken & Biscuits .

Fowler also wrote Long Line Of Losers for Montgomery Gentry and earned some serious "mailbox money."

He also recorded a duet with The Possum - Me and the Boys - on a previous album.

Fowler sources songs driving his pickup at his ranch near Junction - he calls these songs "presents from the song gods."

"Those seem to be the best ones," he said of songs including Cheaper To Keep Her .

He also penned Ain't Dead Yet and Now You're Talkin' with frequent Aussie tourist David Lee Murphy.

Others include I Pulled a Hank Last Night - a strong drinking-man's anthem - and Honky Tonk Junkie is a clever tribute to genre icons.

"I'm almost a heavy-metal fan," said Fowler, who joined hard rocking Dangerous Toys in the early 1990s before founding Southern rockers Thunderfoot and returning to country in the late 1990s.
