KIEFER SUTHERLAND HEADLINES NU COUNTRY TV
British born Canadian singing actor Kiefer Sutherland bemoans Not Enough Whiskey when he headlines Nu Country TV this Saturday October 15 at 9.30 pm on Channel 31/Digital 44.
Arkansas star Justin Moore follows Kiefer in the liquid spirit with his clever play on words on his latest hit on a show repeated Monday at 2.30 am.
Texan Ronnie Dunn extends fermented flavours with former partner Kix Brooks in Behind Bars in the program filmed and edited by Laith Graham.
Fellow Texans Sarah Jarosz, Jamie Lin Wilson and Wade Bowen also return to the show featuring some aquatic humour from the New Jersey Snake Oil Willie Band .
Nu Country TV is a highlight of C 31 streaming list on Digital 44.

NOT ENOUGH WHISKEY FOR KIEFER

Art imitated life when twice wed Kiefer Sutherland wrote Not Enough Whiskey for his new album Down In A Hole, released in Australia this month. Kiefer, 49 and renowned as Jack Bauer in TV drama show 24, has been busted four times for drunk driving. He recently appeared with dad Donald in the movie Forsaken and returns soon in new TV series Designated Survivor. Sutherland got his first leading role in Canadian drama The Bay Boy (1984) that earned him a Genie Award nomination. |
His movie career included Stand by Me (1986), The Lost Boys (1987), Young Guns (1988), Flatliners (1990), A Few Good Men (1992), The Three Musketeers (1993), The Cowboy Way (1994, A Time to Kill (1996), Dark City (1998), Phone Booth (2002) and Melancholia (2011).
He starred in Flashback (1990), as a young cop alongside Dennis Hopper, and Article 99 (1992) with Ray Liotta.
He also starred as Martin Bohm in Fox TV drama Touch and provided the facial motions and English voices of Big Boss and Venom Snake in video games Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
But his country music roots are equally deep.
“I started team roping in the early '90s, maybe late '80s, and I did that for 10 years, and I did it pretty hard. I toured with my heeler, who was a guy named John English,” revealed Sutherland.
“That was all we listened to in the truck, and what I fell in love with. They were listening to Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson - all of those guys wrote in the first-person narrative.”
Songs with painful honest revelations inspired Sutherland.
“The joke that I always make is that I don't think Johnny Cash went to Reno and shot a man to watch him die - but he took on the character, and man, that's my wheelhouse. That's what I do,” Sutherland explained.
“So that's why I started writing in that narrative, was because it could be a character. What I didn't kind of plan on was that the first-person narrative was actually mine.”
So appearing on the Grand Ole Opry was not a huge shock for the actor who operated Iron Works label with Jude Cole for 10 years.
“I went out for sound check and was like an 8-year-old kid testing the water,” he recalled.
“You can't not walk out there and be aware of the historical relevance. You think of the people who've been there.”
So who were his biggest influences?
“Johnny Cash and June Carter,” Kiefer confessed.
“Dolly Parton. I'm a huge fan. I think she's just such a spectacular writer and incredible performer. I still can't figure out how she plays the guitar with the long nails.”
Sutherland is humbled by his reception from other Nashville singers, songwriters and musicians.
“There's a sense of community here,” he said. “I really felt that at the Opry. Everybody wanted everybody to do well.”

JUSTIN MOORE EXPLORES THE WILD WEST

Justin Moore endures some Wild West horseplay - bar fights, bandits and belles that didn't ring for him - in his latest video clip. The singer is tied up in chair bondage after a baseball bat tussle in You Look I Need A Drink from his fourth album Kinda Don't Care. "This may be my favourite video I've ever shot," said Moore, now 32. "I am a huge Western fan, and we shot one with a dose of comedy." Moore is on the hunt for a wanted lady and must repeat the same day - walking in the same bar - but in different circumstances each time until he finds the woman on the poster. “I loved the irony in it, and I thought the songwriters did a great job on it,” Moore added. |
“Plus, melodically, I thought it had a great feel and great rhythm and just was fun. It's been a little while since we've put an up-tempo, fun song out.”
Despite the upbeat tone of the music it's a song - penned by Rodney Clawson, Matt Dragstrem and Natalie Hemby - about heartbreak where the character should have stuck to milk.
“My wife and I have been together 13, 14, 15 years, and we've been married for eight or nine years, so hopefully I'm out of the woods as far as being dumped. That's at least the goal,” Moore joked about the song's character.
“I've never been dumped, but I'm sure that the way I would have coped would have been to grab a drink.”
Moore teams with his Take It Outside touring partner Brantley Gilbert on politically incorrect More Middle Fingers from the album that follows his self-titled 2009 debut disc, Outlaws Like Me in 2011 and Off The Beaten Path in 2013.
Hits include Small Town U.S.A., Backwoods, Point At You, Til My Last Day, Bait A Hook and If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away.

RONNIE DUNN DAMN DRUNK

Texan Ronnie Dunn performs his video for Damn Drink - third of our drinking trilogy videos - in Behind Bars. The singer-songwriter was joined on the song - penned by Liz Hengber, Alex Kline and Ben Stannis - and video by former touring and recording partner Kix Brooks. Ronnie hitched a ride in a pick-up truck after being dismounted in the video. “This is one of those tunes that I immediately gravitated to,” Dunn, now 63, revealed. “I listened to hundreds of songs while writing a few myself. Jay and I took it into the studio and it went to another level. Witnessing a song do that is magic. It is one of the most gratifying dynamics of music for me.” Damn Drunk follows Ain't No Trucks In Texas from Ronnie's third solo album Tattooed Heart that also features Reba McEntire on the song Still Feels Like Mexico . Rascal Flatts' co-founder Jay Demarcus produced 11 of the 12 album tracks. |
"I had a lot of fun making this album. Jay and I really clicked in the studio, and we were both really proud of the final product," Dunn added.
"I branched out of my comfort zone while writing and listening to a ton of music."
Brooks & Dunn toured here twice before splitting in 2010.
Louisiana born Brooks, now 61, has a new book Cookin' It With Kix: The Art of Celebrating and The Fun of Outdoor Cooking published on August 30.

SARAH JAROSZ HOUSE OF MERCY

Austin bluegrass singer Sarah Jarosz returns with her new video for House of Mercy from her fourth album Undercurrent.
Sarah, 25, has recorded and written with Quorn born singer-guitarist Jedd Hughes who lived in Texas after leaving Australia.
She previously appeared on Nu Country with her live rendition of Edgar Allan Poe 1849 poem-ballad Annabelle Lee from her second album Follow Me Down that preceded Build Me Up From Bones in 2013.
Sarah was born in Austin and raised in Wimberley where she learned mandolin at 10 and later guitar, claw-hammer banjo, and octave mandolin.
During her senior year of high school, Jarosz signed with Sugar Hill Records and released debut album Song Up in Her Head in June 2009.
It was produced by Jarosz and Gary Paczosa and featured Chris Thile, Darrell Scott, Stuart Duncan and Jerry Douglas.
Jarosz enrolled in the New England Conservatory of Music in 2009, and graduated with honours in 2013 with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation.
Sara has the best musicians on call in the Texas music capital and toured extensively with Sara Watkins - a founder of Nickel Creek - and Aoife O'Donovan of Crooked Still .

JAMIE LIN WILSON AND WADE BOWEN

Fellow Austin singer Jamie Lin Wilson and Wade Bowen return with Just Some Things from her 2015 album Holidays & Wedding Rings.
Jamie is best known for The Trishas that also features Savanna Welch whose dad Kevin toured here a dozen times with Kieran Kane.
“I'm much more comfortable with a guitar and a melody in front of a camera, than by myself left to ramble,” Wilson says.
“I've been a touring singer/songwriter for over ten years as a member of The Gougers (2003-2009) and Trishas (2009-present).
“Making records has always been one of my favourite parts of my life in music. Creating with friends can rarely be called work on several band albums. I was also able to make a solo 2010 six song EP Dirty Blonde Hair .”
Bowen, a Texas Tech University graduate hails from Waco - hometown of Steve Martin and where Billy Joe Shaver hangs his hat.
Wade was a member of the band, West 84 , with Matt Miller, in 2001.
He released his 2002 debut album, Try Not To Listen , a live disc in 2003 and another studio album in 2006.
In 2008 Wade released If We Ever Make It Home and on November 21, 2009 cut his second live album at famous Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth, Texas.
The album was released on April 27, 2010 as a CD/DVD combo.
Wade released Justin Niebank produced 2012 album The Given - his first for a major label and featuring nine of his originals.
The Given explores relationships from desolation to domestic difficulties and features Texan icon Guy Clark on late Townes Van Zandt classic To Live Is to Fly .
Wade and Randy Rogers also performed their new video for Standards from their joint album Hold My Beer, Volume 1 in 2015 .

SNAKE OIL WILLIE BAND DON'T LOOK GOOD NAKED ANYMORE

New Jersey trio the Snake Oil Willie Band debut on Nu Country with humorous advice for our long hot summer. They filmed I Don't Look Good Naked Anymore with a female flotilla at party in Kemah Lake. It's a hard act to follow for the Sussex County trio celebrating their 21st birthday - but not in those suits. Drummer Tony Krucinski formed Snake Oil Willie in 2015 with vocalist-bassist Frank DeBonis and guitarist-vocalist Seth Fleishman. |
The video features Krucinski singing with friends.
“It was a team effort,” Fleishman says.
“I was mostly on the creative end, Frank [a professional photographer] did the videography, and Tony was the star. We all put the strength on for this project.”
