Carlton duo Andrew Walker and David Ellingham both revealed their country music passion when they nominated Dierks and Lee among their favourite artists a few years before in newspaper interviewers. Van Diemens Land export and St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt confessed to his penchant for the country genre after spending summers with his wife who hails from Waco - latter day hometown of Billy Joe Shaver. Although Nick, 33, has endured plenty of pain in his colourful career he didn't lose three fingers in a teenage saw mill accident like Billy Joe, 76, who also attracted former Collingwood star Rick Barham and latter day Barwon Heads based Sydney Swans recruiter Ricky Barham to his 2002 Corner Hotel concert with singing Texan crime novelist Kinky Friedman. Bentley, now 40, flies his own Cirrus SR 22 to some U.S. concerts after it was featured in his hilarious video for Drunk On A Plane . This time Dierks returns to terra firma for his Pick Up video from 10th album Black - his highest charting album at #2 on Billboard with 101,000 units sold on debut. Pick Up is the third in his four part series that kicked off I'll Be the Moon that pulled the curtain on a love triangle, revealing diverse tensions. "Pick Up drops into the sequence as that point when you just have to be closer to your girl,” Bentley revealed. “For the storyline and plot of these videos, director Wes Edwards definitely takes it there and puts a shocking spin on it. It never works out all nice and neat. It's a little more mysterious than that." CLICK HERE for a Dierks feature in The Diary on March 30, 2014. ERIC GOES TO CHURCH WITH JESUS North Carolina star Eric Church begins our biblical double shot with his video for Like Jesus Does. Church's video illustrates the song on Chief - third of the 39-year-old outlaw's six albums Church topped charts with his recent album Mr Misunderstood. He also honoured Texan singing actor Kris Kristofferson on March 16 in The Life & Songs of Kris Kristofferson tribute concert. Church sang To Beat the Devil - a Kristofferson song he credits with saving his career. “I had a rough time in Nashville, like a lot of people that get told ‘no' a lot,” Church revealed at the concert. “I played that thing where, if I get told ‘no' one more time, I'm out of here; I'm packing up, and I'm going back to North Carolina. “I went into this particular meeting knowing this was going to be the meeting where it all happens. I remember playing probably a half a song, and the guy started waving his hand, and he goes, ‘I don't know where you're from. I don't know much about you. But I'd go back there.' And that's one time I was going to.” Dejected, Church prepared to make the drive back to his home state, ready to pursue another career, when Kristofferson's music gave him the inspiration he desperately needed. “I went to my car in the parking lot of this publishing house, and I had just got The Austin Sessions on a CD, and the next song was To Beat the Devil ,” Church recalled. “The song includes the lines “I was born a lonely singer, and I'm bound to die the same/but I've got to feed the hunger in my soul/and if I never have a nickel, I won't ever die ashamed/cause I don't believe that no one wants to know.” “It talked about the very thing I was going through. I decided to stay one more day - after I got drunk. I got drunk first, then I stayed one more day, and the next day, I got a publishing deal.” CLICK HERE for our interview with Church in The Diary on March 1, 2014. The singer-songwriter won many fans on his Australian tours with gigs at the historic Meeniyan Town Hall, Northcote Social Club and the Out On The Weekend festival at Williamstown. Bingham is well qualified to write and sing about life in the bad-lands north and south of the border. He hit the rodeo circuit early in his teens after moving from town to town. Bingham was born across the New Mexico border from Texas in the boom-and-bust oil town Hobbs. It was a fitting locale for a member of one time Colac and Wallington singer-songwriter Adam Brand's band The Outlaws. Austin was the birthplace of the American outlaw country genre featuring Shotgun Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joe Shaver, Guy Clark, Michael Martin Murphy, singing Texan crime novelist Kinky Friedman and the late Rusty Wier, Steve Fromholz and Townes Van Zandt. There were all featured in the famed Jan Reid book The Improbable Rise Of Redneck Rock in the seventies. That was after Matt's singing sire Wayne Cornell co-founded The Delltones in the sixties and before Matt was born. Cornell showcased a collage of Texans and local icons in Austin - the city where Ryan Bingham once lived. Matt previously appeared on Nu Country on December 18, 2014, with his video for Never Get Out Of This Town on his self-titled debut album.
