They previewed their marathon love recipe at our St Kilda Palais last October with thrice wed Californian born surfing cowboy Gary Allan and Blackjack Billy . Sadly their third Australian tour, predicted for 2016, will be without bassist Robert Reynolds who has walked the plank. Reynolds, who founded the band with Malo, was sacked because of substance abuse issues and asking fans for money under false pretences. "At first, it was kind of strange, but you realize people don't realize what a draining energy that is to have," lead singer Raul Malo says of playing without him. "You're always worried about him." Malo says the group twice paid for Reynolds to be in rehab and was willing to do so again. "I'll say this, it was difficult at first playing without Reynolds but honestly it became very liberating after a while. "That's very taxing, very exhausting. It took a minute, and, of course, you go through the process of being sad and being hurt and being angry. You go through that because you're angry at him." On tour Reynolds was replaced by James Intveld who worked with lead guitarist Eddie Perez who also toured here with Kentucky born singing actor Dwight Yoakam. Reynolds toured here in the nineties with former wife Trisha Yearwood before she wed Oklahoma superstar Garth Brooks. He also performed here with Texan Kevin Montgomery on a more recent tour. Luke won Beechworth's most courageous player in 1991 and best and fairest in 1992 after a Wangaratta Imperials stint in 1989. It was a different Wangaratta team to our former host and fellow singer-songwriter and latter day Elwood resident Paul Hicks and his brothers. Luke played against future AFL stars - Chiltern raised Nigel and Mattie Lappin - but without the trusty canine featured in the video. “Faye Lappin was a teacher of mine in primary school,” Luke confessed. “Then I hung up the boots and started playing music.” Nigel Lappin played 279 games with Brisbane before becoming an assistant coach at Geelong in 2008. Matty Lappin followed 251 games with St Kilda and Carlton with assistant coaching roles at Carlton , Collingwood and Gold Coast. Fellow Chiltern raised footballer and journalist Barrie Cassidy - a one-time Albury flat-mate of this Nu Country producer - rose to greater heights as host of ABC-TV Insiders. That was many moons after accompanying then Prime Minister Bob Hawke, as his press secretary, to the 1989 AFL grand final between Geelong and Hawthorn.
