Last week we reported how his opposition to Coal Seam Gas destroying family farms and waterways landed him and his dad Rick, 71, briefly behind bars in Narrabri. They were protesting on the polluted Namoi river bank near Maules Creek where Rick was raised. It also illustrated fellow singer-songwriter Harmony James video Coal Seam Gas on the same subject. This week we feature the video for Luke's APRA award winning song Three Brothers - a tragic tale about country towns torn apart by foreign wars - from his fifth album Sing You Up . Three of the town's sporting stars and sons of the soil were sent to Gallipoli in the not so-great war. O'Shea doesn't praise masters of that war for massive miscalculations of strategy but country conscripts who made the ultimate sacrifice. The singer personalises his parable by drawing pen pictures of three victims - a tactic that works with a vengeance for the surviving families of the victims. Those credible characters include the youngest - the courageous captain coach of the local footy team who only lasted “three steps on the shore of Gallipoli .” Then there's the school teacher who met the love of his young life on the dance floor of a ball at his town hall but perished “when the shells, they rained like teardrops fell - in Pozieres in France .” Third cab off the rank to the grave is the eldest - “a farmer who once loved to laugh and joke/ but three years on the Western Front something inside him broke/ so much death, the gas, the bombs, few can understand.” Teacher O'Shea shares profession with formed politician and Redgum singer John Schumann whose evocative tune Only 19 picked up the baton for survivors of the Vietnam War. Luke eulogised other heroines Joy McKean and her sister Heather and Joy's late husband Slim Dusty in another video for Lady of The Land about troubadours heading bush at the drop of a hat with their families. O'Shea honoured rural sons and daughters who supported our bush balladeers on the outback agricultural show and rodeo circuit. Luke first performed on Nu Country in our embryonic days when show creator and acclaimed actor-voiceover king Peter Hosking dismounted from the Buck N Bull way out west at Tottenham to the Armadale Hotel wealth belt to catch Luke & his Medicine Wheel spinning live in the saddle. That pub morphed into a fine food and wine HQ and Hosking lives in exile in Prague between tours of Texas and way beyond in his acting and singing soirees. MITCHELL TENPENNY PICKS AND GRINS ON ANOTHER RIVER BANK Tennessean singer-songwriter Mitchell Tenpenny, just 25, found an unpolluted creek bank and bluegrass in his debut video. Acclaimed bluegrass band the Steeldrivers joined him at an idyllic, picking grinning and fishing hole on Cane's Creek on his debut album Black Crow . Both Nashville born Mitchell - grandson of famed Sony Music publisher Donna Hilley - and multi-award winning guitarist and former Steeldrivers singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton are enjoying solo careers. Tenpenny is a fan of the group who enlisted Jason Isbell to produce two songs on their new album. "I have so much respect for every musician in that band and I love their song-writing as well," Tenpenny said. "When I heard they were going to play on Cane's Creek I was nervous honestly, because I think they are so amazing. I'm not worthy but I am grateful. “That was really cool on how that came to be. I remember when I wrote that song and when I played it for the producer, he thought it'd be a great bluegrass song. “And I thought, who could we get to play on it and he mentioned Tammy Rogers, who plays fiddle, to play on it and I loved that idea because I've been a fan of that band for a long time, from Chris Stapleton to Gary Nichols.” Cane's Creek describes the euphoria of finding the perfect fishing spot and sharing it with someone special - a girl. Brandi, 34, sang about how she danced in The Eye in the gem from her sixth album The Firewatcher's Daughter. Brandi's 2007 album title track The Story was featured in TV drama Grey's Anatomy and a General Motors commercial. Grey's Anatomy featured four other Carlile songs - Tragedy, What Can I Say, Throw It All Away and Turpentine "I've gone through all sorts of vocal phases, from pop to blues to R&B, but no matter what I do, I just can't get the country and western out of my voice," Brandi revealed. "Patsy Cline was a big part of me discovering my vocal capacity. Most people don't realize how loud she is. If you really listen closely, the amount of times in any given song that she distorts, you might think it's your car speakers or something. They didn't quite know how to fully contain her voice then. She was loud.” She performed with The Avett Brothers on David Letterman's Late Show on May 4, 2015, on Carter Family classic Keep On the Sunny Side . Jamie is best known for her band The Trishas that also features Savanna Welch whose dad Kevin has toured here a dozen times with Kieran Kane. “I'm much more comfortable with a guitar and a melody in front of a camera, than by myself left to ramble,” Wilson says. “I've been a touring singer/songwriter for over ten years as a member of The Gougers (2003-2009) and Trishas (2009-present). “Making records has always been one of my favourite parts of my life in music. “Creating with friends can rarely be called work on several band albums. “I was also able to make a solo 2010 six song EP Dirty Blonde Hair . “These songs are new and old, but all unreleased - some I wrote on my own and some with friends. “This album will be made in East Austin under the supervision of the great John Ross Silva & Kevin Szymanski, two of my greatest - and most talented - friends.” Further info - http://jamielinwilson.com/ MONTGOMERY GENTRY Kentucky duo Montgomery Gentry returns with the title track of its eighth album Folks Like Us. They sing of life way beyond the big smoke in their rural roots in a 26 year career. It's the Kentucky duo's first album since Rebels On The Run in 2011. Eddie Montgomery, now 51 and brother of fellow country star John Michael Montgomery, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010. He recovered a month later but was served divorce papers by former wife Tracy at his Montgomery's Steakhouse restaurant that he owned in Harrodsburg , Kentucky . It closed abruptly in 2013. The couple had four children and were married for over 20 years. Partner Troy Gentry, now 48, also had bad luck in 2004 when he bought a black bear from Minnesota Wildlife Connection and shot it from inside an electrified enclosure, commonly known as a "canned hunting.” On November 27, 2006, Gentry pleaded guilty to falsely tagging a bear that was killed in a fenced enclosure as if it had been killed in the wild. He was fined $15,000 and ordered give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years. He forfeited the stuffed bear and his bow long before Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer shot popular protected lion Cecil in Zimbabwe on an illegal $50,000 hunt. That's one of the reasons why Troy and Eddie are on the road again to promote their joyous music Luckily, Bob Dylan left Minnesota 50 years ago and is unlikely to be mistaken for a bear on the run.
