GREENCARDS HEADLINE NU COUNTRY TV

Expatriate Anglo-Australian bluegrass band The Greencards headline Nu Country TV this Saturday - July 21 - at 8 p m on C 31.

The trio performs a video for new single Waiting On The Night from acclaimed third CD Viridian.

Greencards - singer and bassist Carol Young, multi-instrumentalist Kym Warner and English born fiddler, viola and cellist Eamon McLoughlin - filmed their video in New York City and Coney Island.

Young, born at Dorrigo near Coffs Harbour, wrote Waiting On The Night with South Australian born guitarist Jedd Hughes who also released a solo CD in the U.S.

Hughes also penned Here You Are for the disc and co-wrote All The Way From Italy with fellow South Australian born Greencards multi-instrumentalist Kym Warner.

Viridian soared American bluegrass and Americana charts on release early this year.

The Greencards have toured the U.S. with artists diverse as Bob Dylan and Shotgun Willie Nelson and plan a return trip here in summer.

LAWRIE WEIR TRIBUTE

Nu Country TV founder Peter Hosking has prepared a collage of late country music archivist Lawrie Weir for this week's show.

Weir, a long time presenter of Long In The Saddle on Nu Country FM and latter day host of Nu Country TV, died suddenly at 59 on May 10.

Hosking, a veteran actor and much in demand voiceover expert, compiled the collage of Lawrie, featuring his role as deadpan interviewer on Guru segments.

The tribute also includes a skit featuring an ill-fated trip to Brunswick to locate a farm where Nu Country TV producer David Dawson's family settled in the 1850's.

This week's host Mid-Pacific Bob Olson - academic peer of Monash University tutor and TAFE lecturer Weir - introduces the tribute.

The show is repeated on Monday at 6.30 am and Thursday at 2 am.

SARA EVANS

Controversial American country music and Dancing With The Stars diva Sara Evans appears this week with a video of her single You'll Always Be My Baby.

Evans, 37 and mother of three, burst onto the scene in the late nineties with her pure country disc Three Chords And The Truth, produced by Pete Anderson.

Since then Sara, discovered by the late Harlan Howard, has branched out with albums that have produced hit singles.

But her ascent to the top was hijacked by a messy, protracted divorce from husband of 13 years Craig Schelske - a failed Republican candidate in Oregon in 2002.

JAKE OWEN

Florida country singer Jake Owen recently celebrated his first #10 hit with the title track of his debut CD Startin' With Me.

This week Owen performs in a video clip of previous #15 hit Yee Haw from the same album.

The song featured in the opening episode of the TV series Friday Night Lights.

Owen, now 26, grew up in Vero Beach and was set to become a professional golfer until a water-skiing injury snuffed out that dream.
Jake enrolled as an English major at Florida State University and began playing in local clubs.

A mere nine credit hours from completing his degree, Owen dropped out of school and pursued music full time.

It worked.

Owen wrote all 11 songs on Startin' With Me with songwriters such as his producer Jimmy Ritchey, Brett James, Bob Regan, Casey Beathard and Chuck Jones.

He has toured with Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood and is now opening the 2007 Alan Jackson/Brooks & Dunn tour with expatriate Australian star Catherine Britt.

PAUL COSTA

Sunraysia singer-songwriter Paul Costa returns this week with a video of his single I Think I Like It from his debut disc Walkin' In These Shoes.

The Robinvale singer, who made six albums with brother Don, has since released a second solo disc Restoration.

The Costa brothers grew up in the same town that produced latter day Melbourne band The T-Bones and just downstream from where prolific Golden Guitar winner Sara Storer was born at Wemen.

STEVE GIBSON

Former world champion saddle bronc rider and country singer Steve Gibson returns with a video for the title track of fourth album The Road To Anywhere.

The Hunter Valley reared rodeo rider, like U.S. peers Chris LeDoux and Moe Bandy, found less painful bucks in the transition to country music.

Gibson was featured on Nine Network show Getaway after appearing as a singer - not a rider at the famed Calgary stampede in Alberta, Canada.

The Scone singer released his debut disc The Wishing Well in 1993 a decade after winning a World Saddle Bronc Riding title and triumphing in the Australian event five times.

And, now aged 45, Gibson is showcasing Road To Anywhere, recorded in Nashville for LGM with producer Rod Nicholson.

Gibson co-wrote 10 of the 12 songs and showcased it at venues diverse as the Mt Isa rodeo and Lee Kernaghan's former Great Western Hotel in Rockhampton.

The album has been released here by Rajon-Sony and features pedal steel and dobro by Mike Johnson and Larry Franklin's fiddle and mandolin.
