DAVE'S DIARY - 22/8/07 - PREVIEW OF EPISODE 11 - SERIES 8

GEORGE AND RANDY HEADLINE NU COUNTRY TV

Randy Travis
Stone country singing legend George Jones headlines Nu Country TV this Saturday - August 25 - at 8 p m on C 31 - with singing actor Randy Travis.

Jones, 75, and Travis perform A Few Ole Country Boys from the George Jones & Friends 50th Anniversary Tribute Concert at the Roy Acuff Theatre in Nashville.

The concert featured artists diverse as Alan Jackson, Aaron Neville, Trace Adkins, Connie Smith, Emmylou Harris, Amy Grant, Tanya Tucker and Wynonna.

It's released in Australia as a triple disc - double DVD and bonus CD - on New West Records.

This week's show is hosted by drummer and raconteur Dave Folley and is repeated on Monday at 6.30 am and Thursday at 2 am.

Jones, recently honoured with the George Jones University established in his name in Civil War town Franklin, is accident-prone.

He broke a wrist late last year in a fall in his producer's studio less than a year after a bout with pneumonia.

Travis, 48, toured here in 1989 at the peak of his country career - he took a break from making movies and gospel albums to perform with his mentor Jones.

His best-known movies included Black Dog, Texas Rangers, Fire Down Below, The Rainmaker, Frank & Jesse James, The Million Dollar Kid, The Trial Of Old Drum, The Wager and The Gift.

Travis's most recent hit Three Wooden Crosses has also prompted plans for a movie.

Jones has been equally prolific as a live performer and recording artist despite being ignored by radio.

Recent releases include his lauded 2006 duets disc with Merle Haggard - Kickin' Out The Footlights...Again and George Jones and Friends - God's Country.

The first Jones-Haggard duets album, Yesterday's Wine, was released in 1982.

The title track (written by Willie Nelson) reached No. 1 on the Billboard country singles chart.
