      Nu Country
DJ Nipper Mack - fresh from a Texas invasion - has joined the bill at
the 10th Nu Country Christmas Party with his band Very Handsome Men.

Nipper and fellow former DJ Colin Weidner soaked up the Texas heat and
music at a diverse array of festivals during their search and destroy
        mission.

A highlight was Nipper singing his own tunes around the celebrity studded
campfires at the annual Tommy Alverson Family picnic Glen Rose at the
Tres Rios River Ranch from October 7-9.

Among other artists on the bill were Billy Joe Shaver, Gary P. Nunn, Randy
Hopper, Shakin' Apostles, Stephen Fromholz, Brian Burns, Max Stalling,
Ed Burleson, Davin James, Rusty Wier, Larry Joe Taylor, Mark David Manders,
1100 Springs, Kevin Deal, Cornell Hurd and Ray Wylie Hubbard.

Alverson, a veteran outlaw country artist, won widespread airplay on Nu
Country for his five albums including two live discs and Me On The
        Juke Box.

"The promoter grabbed me and took me to the main campfires, and said
"This here's Nipper from Australia, and he can play with the big
dogs", which warmed the very cockles of my heart," says Nipper
whose music CV since 1994 includes Stinky Taylor and diverse party bands.

"I performed Tattooed Girl and This Life. Both were
big hits as well as a new song
        Jesus And Me.

"Things are looking very good for being booked at the gathering next
year as well as some shows around Dallas.

"I had a good drink with the legendary Rusty Wier and an even bigger
one with his son Coby who is quickly becoming a guitar legend."

This was a nice segue for Nipper 26 years down the Lost Highway.

I interviewed Wier on a 1978 Texas sojourn - long after his 1975 song
Don't It Make You Wanna Dance was recorded here by the late Hawking
        Brothers.

Very Handsome Men are no strangers to C 31 with regular live spots on
        the popular
Russ Kellett's Melbourne Saturdays at 9am.

The group has won community radio airplay for its debut album We Are and
struts its stuff in suburbs as far afield as Coburg, Preston and St Andrews.

LOUIE & THE FLIES WEST TOORAK DEBUT
      Port Fairy
country princess Louise Clancy and suburban senorita Suzie Dickinson also
        perform at the party.

The free show for Nu Country members, friends and fans will be the Toorak
debut of Louie & The Flies.

Louise's Shipwreck Coast band Louie & The Rustlers finished third
in the CCMA national talent quest in Tamworth after gigs at Koroit Irish
        festival and Mt Gambier
        Country Music festival.

Louie & The Flies feature Clancy, Monique Brumby guitarist Don Farrell,
Dead Livers guitarist Rodger Delfos and bassist Michael Schack.
       SUZIE
        DICKINSON - NEW CISCO KIDS

            |
          Suzie
Dickinson & The Cisco Kids were a popular act on the Spurs Cowboy
            bar circuit in the eighties.

Suzie joined expatriate Kiwi P C Caulton & The Pick-Ups, Billy
Jack, Dead Livers and many others performing at Spurs in Moorabbin,
            Campbellfield, Norlane and Canberra.

The Spurs circuit, sponsored by CUB, was the brainchild of latter
day Nashville publisher, manager and Atlantic Records CEO Barry and
            Jewel Coburn. |

      Latter day
music teacher Suzie has earned a higher profile in the new millennium
by returning to performing with her new band.

Drummer Ron Mahoney formerly of Broken Spoke performs with Louie and Suzie
        - famed for her roles with the Cisco Kids on Spurs cowboy bar circuit
        in the eighties.

Vocal coach Suzie, Mahoney and bassist Dave Flett of Captain Matchbox
        perform as a trio.
Other artists will be added to the bill for volunteers celebrating a decade
of toil for the most under-represented music genre on Australian radio
        and TV.

      Barnlaid
also feature in a colourful documentary being filmed for a DVD or video.

"A friend shot rehearsal and early gig footage about two years ago,"
Gaynor revealed. "We have only recently accessed this footage. The
performance at Jackson Street was also filmed and an interview conducted.
This is planned to be edited together with a running narrative and (hopefully)
will be finalised in time for us to send it to all our families as belated
        Christmas presents."
       MUSIC
        CV

BARNLAID describes itself as a five piece musical scrum featuring twin
fiddles, double bass, guitar, mandolin and ukulele - and, of course, pure
        vocal harmonies.
It has been together for almost three years.

The two girls and three guys' combined performance history encompasses
decades playing in bands across Australia. Personal influences - including
punk, country, rockabilly, classical, swamp, indie pop and folk - combine
to give Barnlaid a distinct and unmatched sound.
      PERSONNEL
      Cath C-Bo
        Boerema (violin, mandolin, ukulele, vocals)
The possum glue what holds us together as my toothless Pop used to say.

C-Bo was the instigator for getting a frustrated group of music exiles
back together for 'one last gig, man' and (drum roll) thus was BARNLAID
born. A violin virtuoso, C-Bo also sings up a storm and is a survivor
of the indie-pop and folk/country circuits. She deserves mention for that
        alone..
      Wah-Wah Wayne
        Drury (guitar, keyboards, vocals)

An aspirational player from Melbourne's Deep South Delta, Wah-Wah has
been a core member of such infamous outfits as Teen Beat, I'll Be A Bastard
Like My Father, Elvis Minogue, Barry Plankton and The Afro Merkin All
Stars. No other words are necessary.
      David D-Kill
        Nelson (double bass, vocals)

The handsome man in the band, D-Kill brings the necessary touch of axle
grease to the group. His band list is extensive and includes two current
projects besides BARNLAID, namely The Killjoys and The Dukes of Debonair.
In his own words, D-Kill 'learnt how to slap bass and learnt how it felt
to be slapped in the face by fiery women.'
      Andrew Drum
Riser Gaynor (guitar, ukulele, mandolin, vocals)
This boy's journey to BARNLAID runs from his amphetamine-fuelled youth
punk exorcisms through to Vegas-style cabaret on showboat tours full of
drunken, shameless pensioners. The scars are deep and the catch in his
voice brings many a tear, not least to himself.
      Sue-Fait
        Do Gallagher (violin, mandolin, vocals)

Don't let the ample, dimpled charms of this teenage heartbreaker fool
you. There's always a line-up of starry-eyed youth down the front when
Ms Fait Do summonses up the furies in her keening violin, or stares imploringly
into space, singing of love gone wrong, redemption and the joys of love
        gone right.
