DAVE'S DIARY - 10 JANUARY 2004 - STEVE DOYLE

STEVE AND BILLY BRIDGE COUNTRY

Two Victorian dairy farm refugees Steve Doyle and Billy Bridge head the maverick garden state posse fighting for gongs at the 2004 Australian Country Music Awards.

Doyle made the finals of the prestige Star Maker quest with a two track CD, produced by Joe Camilleri.

His song, In The Country, is illustrated by a video clip - a highlight of Episode four of the first series of Nu Country TV.

The title track of Doyle's debut CD features Ed Bates on pedal steel and Gerry Hale on fiddle.

Steve Doyle
Doyle, reared on a family dairy farm near Cohuna between Echuca and Swan Hill on the Murray, is a prolific writer.

He used a farm ute as the focus of the video depicting the joys of life in the bush.

Steve, taller than but not quite as heavy as Geelong captain Steven King, could dominate the centre bounce in footy but instead chose music, production and community radio.

He utilised his production skills on dance aspirant HITS FM before doing production work with Peter Hosking on Nu Country FM.

Doyle, who strutted his stuff at Nu Country showcases, graduated from the Tamworth CMAA Country Music College last year.

IN THE COUNTRY

It gave him the confidence to film and produce a video clip for In The Country - one of the best home-grown clips of 2003.

It helped him make the Top 20 of the Star Maker quest with fellow Victorians Neil Anthony of Brighton and Kylee Ellis of Rye.

"I sent the two tracks on my CD as part of my application, but in the finals I'm going to be doing Save Your Heart (a new one!), Just In Time and of course I'll feature In The Country," Doyle told Nu Country.

"I'm really looking forward to it. I've been doing lots of preparation, now it's time to head up there again and see what happens.

The 20 finalists in the Toyota Star Maker Quest compete for a prize package that includes recording and release of two songs on ABC Country, production of a video clip, use of a new Toyota vehicle for 12 months, festival bookings, promotion and publicity.

The person named 2004 Toyota Star Maker Winner has a strong launch pad.

He or she will join country music luminaries who have won the title over 24 years including Keith Urban, James Blundell, Gina Jeffreys, Beccy Cole, Lee Kernaghan, Brendon Walmsley, Lyn Bowtell, Grant Richardson, Kate Ballantyne, Darren Coggan, Kylie Sackley and Todd Williams.
