DAVE'S
DIARY - 7/2/11 - WAYLON JENNINGS/ BARBARA DOWLING UPDATE
WAYLON
JENNINGS TRIBUTE SONGS MULTIPLY
|
Prominent
Australian country music archivist and former Nu Country FM Long
In The Saddle show host Barbara Dowling is back in the saddle
again.
Her extensive list of songs that mention the late Waylon Jennings
in their title or lyrics has multiplied - with a little help from
many of her friends and Texan readers.
The pioneer-CMAA judge and Wandong Country Music festival pioneer
was flooded with additions to her list originally published in the
Diary on April 20, 2010.
She is indebted to Australian disc jockeys and readers and music buff
Andrew Hall from Waco - the city that Billy Joe Shaver has long called
home.
Waylon recorded his famed Honky Tonk Heroes album that only
featured one song not written by the Papa Joe's saloon straight shooter. |
Dowling has
updated her list to coincide with the release of the first in a trilogy
of tribute discs to the singer who died from diabetes related illness
at 64 on February 13, 2002.
NEW
WAYLON TRIBUTE DISC
The Music
Inside: A Collaboration Dedicated to Waylon Jennings Vol 1 was released
this month - exactly nine years after his death.
|
Jamey
Johnson performs The Door Is Always Open, Mental Revenge and
This Time on the disc that also features his widow Jessi Colter
and their only son - singing actor Shooter Jennings.
Colter performs a dynamic duet of Good Hearted Woman with Texan
Sunny Sweeney and Shooter delivers Belle of the Ball as a ballad.
Other artists include James Otto, Randy Houser, Kris Kristofferson
and Alabama.
Other Waylon tribute discs include Lonesome, Orn'ry & Mean
and I've Always Been Crazy that received wide exposure
last decade. |
Red River
Tribute - a live double compilation CD featuring mainly Texas artists
plus Shooter Jennings - also appeared in 2003 with proceeds going to The
American Diabetes Foundation.
Shady Creek Outlaws also released Waylon Grass - a Bluegrass Tribute
to Waylon Jennings - in 2006.
Dowling is a revered expert on the famed outlaw singer and actor, Colter
and Shooter who played his dad in Johnny Cash movie Walk The Line.
She wants to complete an exhaustive list of recorded songs that feature
the name or nickname of Waylon.
Here is her updated list.
