Neil Murray Van Diemen’s Land History Lesson
Western district singer-songwriter Neil Murray headed south to Van Diemen’s Land for his return to our show.
Neil, now 68, was born in Ararat and raised on his family farm at Lake Bolac.
He was co-founder of the Warumpi Band and The Rainmakers and has written many songs about our vast outback and several books.
He also ventured into Van Diemen’s Land and Flinders Island for his historic social comment tune Tears of Wybalenna from his 10th album The Telling.
Tears of Wybalenna tells of treachery and devastation that befell Tasmania’s First Nations people in the early years of colonisation.
“I had a rough, general knowledge of Tasmania’s history and the devastating impact on its First People but it didn’t really hit me emotionally until I stood in the graveyard at Wybalenna,” Murray revealed.
“The grief and sadness was palpable. How those old people were betrayed. Their suffering and loss. It was not difficult to extrapolate or to conclude. Lines like: “all the sorrow in the world can be traced right back to an invading force and the humanity they lack”- were just there in the ether. It wasn’t a labour. But I was compelled to it out of a kind of love. So those Old People, their story, their voices, are still heard and not forgotten.”
The video for Tears of Wybalenna was filmed and directed by Jin Tommo with footage of Wybalenna, Flinders Island supplied by Sammi Gowthorp.
In 1995 Murray was awarded APRA song of the year for My Island Home – originally written for the Warumpi Band and re-recorded by Christine Anu.
My Island Home was featured in the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
